The character is called Leatherface because of the fact that he uses the human skin of his victims as a mask.  In the original movie, Leatherface is shown to have a family whom he is afraid of.  Together, this weird family goes and commits murders as well as cannibalism.  They eat the victims of Leatherface and use their bones to build the interior of their home.  Indeed, this is a very dark story, which is probably why the movie is considered as one of the classics until now.

One of the main reasons that Leatherface is as sick as he is in the movie, is because he was an abused child, having been abused by both his parents and his schoolmates when he was still growing up.  There also some insinuations that the Leatherface character may have been inspired by Ed Gein, a true-to-life serial killer who also wore his victims’ skins.
